Artefacts

The North London Darkroom is pleased to present Artefacts, a group show featuring the work of Tim Bradshaw, Carolyn Chapman, Jolanta Dolewska, Jonathan Duckworth, Sebastian Edge, Gabriel Vigo, Vish and Tereza Zelenkova.

The exhibition pays homage to the beauty and processes of black and white analogue photography and darkroom printing techniques. The eight photographers in Artefacts have different working methods and pictorial modes, ranging from abstract to representational, but all share a concern with the creation of an object of a tactile nature.

Darkroom prints are presented as unique and material objects, and their inherent qualities of size, texture or orientation directly affect the image, becoming part of the perception of it. They bear traces of the human hand, but are also subject to the uncontrollable variables of printing. Combined with the original intention of the photographer, these coincidences result in cultural artefacts of time.

The choice of proposing this photographic path in a time of continuous turmoil and frantic production of digital images emphasises the importance of the re-appropriation of a more carefully considered thought and method of observation. Here, the time between looking, shooting and printing is not exclusively delegated to technologies, but it rather takes a more alchemical and crafted meaning.

By celebrating the beauty of wet printing processes, the exhibition intends to create a space for greater awareness and sensitivity of the performance of various photographic materials and printing techniques.

Artefacts brings the audience closer to the practice and craftsmanship of photographic printing, giving space to the visual and tactile dimension of the image that usually emerges only through the collaboration between photographer and printer.
